Hans Guler, who came from a family of mountain guides, opened the Chesa Grischuna hotel and restaurant in Klosters in 1938. He had commissioned the then very well-known Zurich architect Hermann Schneider, who also designed the Chesa Veglia in St. Moritz, to build the house. An existing, old inn was transformed into a unique «Bündner Haus» with the help of contemporary artists. A few months later, the Second World War broke out...
The Chesa Grischuna is a masterpiece of local craftsmanship and 1930s design. The paintings on the house wall are by Alois Carigiet. Every child in Switzerland knows the Graubünden painter, who illustrated the beguilingly beautiful picture books of Schellen-Ursli and his sister Flurina. More about the «Graubündner Haus» Chesa Grischuna:
During the Second World War, American GI's who had escaped from prison camps to neutral Switzerland were interned in the historic house in the heart of Klosters. The Chesa Grischuna became their favourite pub and hotel. After the war, they returned with their families for a holiday stay. Among them were later film stars, directors and world-famous writers. This is how the hotel soon became affectionately known as «Hollywood on the Rocks».
Many famous names signed the guest book: Juliana, the Queen of Holland with her daughter Beatrix, General Guisan, film greats like Greta Garbo («Mata Hari, Ninotschka»), Gene Kelly («Singin' in the rain»), Rex Harrison («My Fair Lady»), William Wyler («Ben Hur»), Françoise Sagan («Bonjour tristesse»), Deborah Kerr («The King and I»), Anthony Perkins («Psycho»), Renée Zellweger («Bridget Jones Diary»), writers like Irwin Shaw («The Young Lions»), Peter Viertel («African Queen») and John Irving («The Hotel New Hampshire»).
